Investors looking for opportunities in climate change

Investors controlling more than $20 trillion of investment money are looking at the opportunities in climate change. In a U.N. summit in New York, more than 400 clean energy investors from sectors such as finance, insurance and banking joined to mobilize clean energy investments and developments in green technologies. The major world capital providers met at the conference held by UN non-profit groups, and investors, in Jan 2012 and the institutional investors felt the private sector should actively participate in the climate change program not just for social reasons but for profits as there has been a huge demand for the development of new technologies and investment plans in the field of climate change.

Bloomberg released the list of worldwide investments on clean energy on 18 January 2012 (the 2011 Clean Energy and EST League Table) and it revealed the amount of investments in clean energy reached $260 billion, in 2011, which is 5% up from last year and almost 5 times of the amount invested in 2004. The names in the list include investors, banks, law firms and project financers. U.S. moved to position 1 in 2011 after trailing China from last few years, and the success is accredited to the stimulus spending of the Obama government.

R & D has been the main area of government investment in the carbon market but worldwide steps are being taken to increase participation of the private sector in reducing the carbon footprint. Today, climate related policies are part of every economy and an improved management of investments in carbon credits and regulating carbon emission is required. With the growing involvement of nations and private investors, the carbon credit marketplace is now the marketplace which cannot be ignored.

Investment in Amazon rainforests to prevent climate change

Amazon rainforests - The carbon absorber turning into carbon emitter

Forest degradation and deforestation are two main reasons having severe impact on climate change leading to the reduction in the amount of carbon which was absorbed by the Amazon rainforest. The Amazon Rainforest has a great potential to reduce the level of carbon in the atmosphere (as mentioned in the Journal of Nature) and it is also resilient  to external disturbances such as   seasonal droughts floods, logging , fire  and fragmentation  but the growing level of deforestation in Amazon has  severe impact on climate.
